Chapter Eleven

-Nic-

The wolves show up the very next day, making this whole situation even more dangerous by coming directly to Ivan’s house. He was livid, and I wasn’t sure anyone was going to walk out of that situation alive. But with one sniff, they seemed to get what they wanted.

After that, new rules were put in place.

“We took the liberty of printing you up a schedule and some nutritional guidelines,” the grinning wolf said, like he was some kind of nurse.

He tried to hand me a bag, but Ivan snatched it first to see what was in it. Bottles galore, with enough rattling pills in them to give me a migraine. Multi-vitamins, supplements, neo-natal vitamins, and some tinctures that were specifically for shifter consumption, apparently.

According to the wolves, I was to take about a billion of those daily, down regular meals rich in protein, and attend weekly appointments with a shifter doctor who would monitor the progress of the baby.

But in exchange, Sophie was brought back to me that evening, completely oblivious to the danger she’d faced. And I was left to make a difficult decision.

Ivan wanted us both to stay with him, but I’m not sure how I could’ve explained that to Sophie. I knew I’d have to tell her eventually. She knows what I am, even if she doesn’t really understand it. Dad was never really quiet about the fact that he had an omega for a son, but at least Sophie never treated me like I was some freak of nature.

So it was either tell Sophie the whole truth upfront and risk her getting way more involved in this than she should, or tell Ivan I wasn’t going to stay with him anymore.

I expected both to be difficult, but I never expected the second to be like ripping a piece of my soul away from my body.

Something inside of me dug its claws in and tried to make me as physically repelled as possible by the idea. That’s when I had my first bout of so-called morning sickness. At 5PM.

It took me two hours to be able to get the words out without retching, and Ivan was there the whole time. Offering me warm wash cloths. Helping me get into the shower. Rubbing my back as I sat on the bathroom floor, feeling sorry for myself.

It’s a good thing Sophie was busy with her tablet downstairs, because she definitely would’ve noticed something was up.

Once I finally felt like a human being—and after practically sterilizing my mouth with half a bottle of mouth wash—I faced him with enough nervousness and uncertainty to still make my stomach lurch.

“I’m going to take Sophie back home tomorrow,” I’d said, hoping that by phrasing it that way, I could convince myself that I was even remotely confident.

“Are you going to find someone to watch
